Frustrated……

13 Feb

Earlier in the week, I was having trouble with shin splints to the point where they were so bad, I was cutting my runs short. Now today, I got up and went to the gym for what was suppose to be a long run that ended up lasting less than a mile because my hips were so tight and my IT band was giving me problems! UGH Every time I tried to run it hurt like crazy. I still made sure to get a work out in and rode the stationery bike. I also came home and foam rolled like crazy. I also decided that I would head to the gym in the evening to try again. Yeah, EPIC FAIL! IT band was still sore but not as bad and then the shin splints were back. I’m thinking this is a combination of things: 1. When I woke up this morning I could feel how tight my hips were and they still are. 2. I need to stretch/foam roll way more then I already do to help with my hips and shin splints. 3. I’m about ready for new shoes. #3 is sort of a dilemma; do I wait til after Princess to get them? I was thinking of maybe getting new inserts to tide me over for the next couple weeks but I just don’t know what to do. But either way, I’m completely frustrated and I’m hoping to have a much better run tomorrow.

I'm sorry things have been so rough. I hope you feel better soon. With the shoes you could always get them and try them out before the princess and decide after that

For shoes, I would get them now and start rotating them. You could also buy the inserts for your current shoes in case you don't break in your new shoes. My coach suggests we have 2 shoes to always be running in, but I don't do that. Oops. I truly hope you feel better. You can make it.

Shin splints are no fun. Often, old or worn shoes are the cause. Change in training (like increasing mileage) can be another.
When I've had shin splints, I iced, stretched like crazy and cycled. They'd disappear as quickly as they surfaced. Hope you can get rid of yours quickly.

I think I'd get the shoes now and see if it makes a difference. You don't have to run the Princess in them, if you see that it doesn't help, but wouldn't it be a kicker if old shoes were the real problem here?

I would get new shoes STAT- if they fit well they will need no break in time. I get horrific shin splints when my shoes start to break down..
So I'd prescribe- new shoes, stretch, ice and stay positive!
We'll all be sending good thoughts your way!

I spent three months with horrible shin splints, and finally got them under control after seeing an Ortho. What helped me:
    – wearing my compression sleeves 24/7 for about two weeks, even sleeping in them
    - Stretching my calves
    - Icing for 20 minutes after every run
    – New shoes, more neutral than my first pair
    – really working on opening my hips. Try pigeon pose and runner's lunges.

    Hope this helps!

new shoes, ice A LOT, stretches, compression sleeves. I had over inflamed shin splints during the summer from increasing my mileage and the wrong shoes. This is not something you want to mess with so close to your race day. Good luck!

Hate to say it, but it sounds like you need a couple days off to just RICE. Don't forget the R means rest. ;-) I would also get the new shoes ASAP. Shin splits, for me, are a sign of worn out shoes.

I would get the new shoes now! Rotate and see if everything is better with new shoes.

I'm late to the game on this one, but I'd get the new shoes, too. Who knows – they could feel fabulous right away and your running might feel better, too! I got lucky with my latest shoes – the first time I wore them I was hooked and breaking them in was a cinch!
